At 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, our precious Mother passed away. Her children were at her bedside as she was received in the arms of Jesus. Bettie Joe Mitterlehner Waterfallen was born in Shreveport the 28th day of June 1929. She was the second child, and the only girl, from the marriage of Willder Embry Mitterlehner and her father, Walter Oliver. She was a delight to her mother, who then raised a magnificent lady. She attended primary schools in Shreveport, graduating from Byrd High School in 1946. She was very attractive and popular, voted The Byrd High School Beauty. She then attended Centenary College, majoring in Art and Music. While at Centenary, she met the love of her life, James Robert “Jim” Waterfallen. He arrived at Centenary on a football scholarship, following tours in the Pacific Theatre as a U. S. Marine during World War II. Married on February 17, 1948, they together enjoyed 49 wonderful years. Mother’s “career” of raising children began with the birth of her first child, James Robert Waterfallen, Jr. Four more children would follow – John, Tommy, Susie, and Patti. Initially living in rural Oklahoma, they moved back to Shreveport to be closer to her family. Bettie was raised in the church and she and Jim were early members of Sunset Acres Baptist Church. Her children grew up in the church. Bettie taught 3-year old Sunday school for many, many years. She was active with the church choir for over 40 years. During those years, she worked tirelessly contributing to the annual Christmas pageant. Among her talents, she was a vocalist and an accomplished seamstress. Visiting those with illness or grief became a passion for Bettie in later years. She would sit for hours if she felt such was required to comfort those in need. She and Jim later transferred their membership to Brookwood Baptist Church and enjoyed many years in that congregation.
The first half of her marriage was all about the children. The last half was about enjoying their marriage – time together, traveling, and grandchildren. Mother was always poised and dressed for the occasion. She would have on makeup and high heels, if possible. That’s how we remember Mother! She was full of life, kindness, and always available to love and lift others up. Mother, we will miss your smile, your warm sweet presence, and the way you always put others first!
Sixteen years ago, our Mother began showing signs of cognitive decline. Our sister, Susie, made the decision to move in with Mother for care and support. Susie gave up everything to be the continual caregiver for Mother. All of us who love our Mother are forever indebted to Susie for this amazing display of love and compassion.
