Harold Eugene Bland, 98, born August 31, 1922, passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. Graveside services will begin at 10:00am on Saturday, June 5th at Forest Park Cemetery (St. Vincent Ave.). Officiating will be Reverend Dr. Greg Davis, of Broadmoor United Methodist Church.
Harold was a native and life-long resident of Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church for over 70 years.
Harold graduated from Fair Park High School and attended Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. He married the love of his life, Martha P. Bland, on April 7, 1945, after meeting in high school.
During his college years, Harold worked in the laboratory at JB Beaird Company, and later joined the Navy in 1944. While in the Navy, Harold specialized in radiography, and traveled to Washington, DC., and Maryland to work in the Naval Ordinance and Naval Investigation Laboratories. When not working, he enjoyed playing the tenor saxophone in a band.
Harold was honorably discharged in 1946, and returned to work for JB Beaird as a metallurgist. He later worked for the Brewster Company and Steel Forgings until retiring in 1987. Harold also had a passion for ranching, and owned/operated a working cattle farm until 1996.
Harold and his wife were active in the community and made many life-long friends over the years. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Petroleum Club, and was active with the Church. Harold also loved to travel with his wife and daughter, making many trips across the United States and abroad.
Before moving to the Oaks of Louisiana in 2016, Harold enjoyed nearly 70 years at his beloved home on Linden Street.
Harold will be remembered for his quick wit, unwavering sharp memory and gracious generosity and kindness.
Mr. Bland was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Everett E. Bland; his wife, Martha P. Bland; his daughter, Julie D. Reid; and brother, Edgar Bland. He is survived by his grandson, William M. Reid; his granddaughter, Melissa Reid-Gibb and husband, Jeffery; and their children, Aubrey and Emily Gibb.
Pallbearers will be William M. Reid, Jeffery Gibb, William P. Reid, and Myron Page.
