Helen Dinah Cowden

1926 ~ 2021 (age 95)


Dinah Cowden was a devoted mother, wife, and grandmother who passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of December 25, 2021 at the age of 95. She was born on June 11, 1926 in St. Louis, MO to Oliver Britton Smith and Helen Dehner Smith. She grew up and attended high school in Vivian, LA, where she met George Cowden, later her husband of sixty-two years. She graduated from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, TX in 1949 and went to work for the Caddo Parish School Board as secretary for the Superintendent, living in Shreveport for the rest of her life. She is survived by one sister (Mary Plemmons of Marshall, TX), four daughters, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

Her daughters are Ann Cooksey (husband, David), Kay Medlin (husband, Dale Earwood), Helen Hardy, and Judy Lee. Her grandchildren are Kelly Cooksey, Ashley Cooksey Shore (husband, Jason), Andrew Medlin (wife, Tara), Laura Medlin, Matthew Hardy (wife, Krysten), Christopher Hardy, Lauren Lee, and Gram Lee (wife, Michaela); and her great-grandchildren are Bridget Shore, Caroline Shore, Violet Medlin, Alice Medlin, Mandy Hardy, Isla Hardy, and Lily Hardy.

She served as a volunteer at Schumpert Hospital for many years and worked for Dr. Brooks Garrett as his personal secretary. She was a proud member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for decades, and she attended Mass several times per week. Dinah also led a busy personal life, which included travelling often with George.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Memorial donations can be made to St. Jude’s Hospital (Memphis, TN) or the charity of one’s choice. Private funeral mass and graveside ceremonies will be held in her memory.
