Jimmie Lou Swearingin

August 31, 1927 ~ June 26, 2022 (age 94)


Jimmie Lou Ivins Swearingin, 94, died Sunday, June 26, 2022. Jimmie was born August 31, 1927, to Arthur Otto Ivins and Virgil Ellen Brawner in Saint Jo, TX. She attended Saint Jo High School as an outstanding student graduating in 1943.

On March 9, 1945, Jimmie married her loving husband John Thomas Swearingin in Corpus Christi, TX. They celebrated their 75th anniversary in March 2020. After traveling many places with her husband, they settled in Houston, TX. She was a wonderful homemaker and later employed by Coldwell Banker as a Realtor and Sales Manager.

Jimmie and John retired in 1987 to Lake Bistineau near Ringgold, LA for 18 years. They were always supportive of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where she was also recognized by the Diocese of Shreveport for splendid service as a member of St. Paul’s Parish Finance Council, representing Blessed Sacrament. She joined Barbara Bush’s “Literacy Program” to teach people of any age the joy of reading. Her volunteer work brought her great joy. She also enjoyed reading, playing bridge and games with family and friends. Her grandchildren will always remember the times they shared with their Lou Lou. In 2005, they moved to Shreveport to live out their “Golden Years”.

Jimmie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was loyal to her parents and to her brothers and sister and thanked God every day for her loving family. She was committed to higher education for her children and grandchildren. Jimmie always volunteered her service at the children’s schools.

Jimmie was preceded in death by her devoted husband, John Thomas Swearingin; her beloved son, John Michael Swearingin; parents, A.O. (Pete) and Virgil Ivins; in-laws, Raymond and Nell Swearingin; two brothers, Herschel Ivins and Doyle Ivins; sister, Lois Jean Garrison and husband, Earl Ray. She is survived by two sons; B. Dan Swearingin and wife, Kaye, and David A. Swearingin; five grandchildren, Mary-Kathryn McCullars and husband Scott, Susan Morris and husband James, Lauren Crawford and husband Stephen, Leslie Reed and husband Michael, and Michael Swearingin and wife Chelou; 11 great grandchildren, Jake, Caroline, Sophie, Henry, Charles, Benjamin, Landen, Jack, Lane, Georgia, and William; and sister-in-law, Linda Ivins.

A Mass to celebrate her life presided by the Very Reverend Matthew Long will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 1, 2022, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Atlantic Avenue, Shreveport, LA, with burial to follow at Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent Ave. A visitation will be held Thursday, June 30, 2022, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Avenue, Shreveport, LA.

Honoring her as pallbearers will be members of her family.
