Dr. Joseph W. Zaffater, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 in Clearwater, FL after a brief illness. A celebration of his life will be held from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021 at Cordaro's Event Center at 3055 Knight St. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Park. Officiating will be Father Charles Glorioso.
Born January 8, 1941, "Joey," as he was affectionately called in his younger years, was a native of Shreveport, LA and a resident of St. Petersburg, FL for 22 years. He graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1958, where he played baseball and football and was a letterman and an All-City end in 1957. In 1958, Joe was a member of the All-City American Legion baseball team as well as the Shreveport Times All-City baseball team. He earned an Accounting and Statistics degree from Louisiana Tech in 1962, where he was a Pi Kappa Alpha and lettered in baseball. Joe graduated from Loyola Dental School in New Orleans in 1969, and started his first practice with his father in Shreveport.
During his following years, Joe was a member of the American Dental Association and the Louisiana and Florida Dental Associations. He also was a member of the Sons of Italy, the Elks Club, and the Knights of Columbus. Joe liked all things sports oriented and played softball for years. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys but then became a fan of the New Orleans Saints and watched them win the Super Bowl. He also enjoyed going to the Tampa Bay Rays baseball games . A hunter and fisherman, Joe enjoyed spending time at his camp with his children as they grew up. Over the years, Joe also became an advocate for animals, rescuing many in need.
Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents, Felix and Clara Rodriguez, and Anthony and Mary Zaffater; his parents, Dr. Joseph W. and Camille Zaffater; and sister, Camille Zaffater.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Lauren Zaffater; sons, Joseph W. Zaffater, III,"Jay" and wife Leslie, and David Warren; grandchildren, Caitlin S. Zaffater, Joseph W, Zaffater, IV ," Jacob," Mia Magali Zaffater, Garic Martin Zaffater; sister, Carol Zaffater Ferrara; former wife, Karen Aertker Erwin; numerous cousins; and wife, Susan.
