Nelle Vernon Hagius, age 93, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2021, in Baton Rouge, LA, with family at her side. Nelle was born on September 3, 1928, in Gladewater, TX, to Sam L. and Amanda Vernon.
A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, she graduated from Gladewater High School and attended Abilene Christian University and Draughon Business School, before working for the City of Abilene, TX. Nelle was working at an industrial equipment supplier when she met her future husband Leon “Gus” Edwin Hagius, Jr.
After a June to September courtship, Nelle and Gus were married in Gladewater before moving to Baton Rouge, LA, where Gus finished his Engineering degree at L.S.U. After several moves to TX and AR related to Gus’ work in the oil industry, they settled in Baton Rouge where they raised their family and remained during their lifetimes. Nelle retired from civil service work with the State of Louisiana, working at Southern University and Earl K. Long Hospital. She recently resided at Whealdon Estates Retirement Community, where she enjoyed interacting with both the staff and residents. She was preceded in death by Gus, her husband of 56 years; her parents; her two brothers, Carroll Vernon and Jerdy Vernon; and one sister, Sammie Ruth Tyler. She is survived by two sons, Frederick Edwin Hagius and Kendrick (Sue Davidson) Vernon Hagius, and their families. Nelle had six grandchildren: Lauren (Will) Lipham, Christine (Dallas) Rogers, Rosemary (Ben) Cox, Jessica (Matt) O’Neal, Kevin Hagius, and Scott Hagius, along with numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and one new great-great grandson.
A woman of strong faith, Nelle was a member of the Goodwood Church of Christ. She was a kind, generous, and loving mother who instilled values of respect, hard work, and responsibility. She treasured time with family and friends and made her home welcome and open to others, for a visit, a meal, or to stay.
A special thanks to Erica Ventress for the care and attention given to Nelle during her 14 years at Whealdon Estates and especially during this most recent transition. The family also wishes to thank Audubon Hospice.
A graveside service will be held on October 15, 2021, at 1 p.m. at Forest Park East Cemetery (3700 St. Vincent Ave) in Shreveport, Louisiana.
