Stanley Williams “Chip” Burke III, 74, passed away on Saturday, May 22, 2021 after a valiant battle with cancer.
Chip was a man of faith and had an unwavering love of life, family, and travel. Chip’s love of life and adventure, instilled by his parents, began at an early age. He was born in New York City, spent his elementary years in South America, and later attended boarding school at Portsmouth Priory in Portsmouth, Rhode Island where he graduated in 1966.
He then attended Regis College in Denver, Colorado where he met his wife of 50 years, Barbara O’Brien Burke. After graduation, Chip and Barbara moved to New York City, where he began a career in the banking industry. The couple moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1975. In 1989, Chip and his sister, Eleanor, opened Burke & Burke Insurance. Chip was honored to have served on the board of the National Association of Health Underwriters.
He was also a long-time supporter of the Louisiana Association for the Blind, YMCA, Oakwood Home for Women, Meals on Wheels, served as President of the Louisiana Soccer Association and was head coach of the C.E Byrd boys soccer team.
Chip loved the spirit of sports and was an avid participant, spectator, and coach. Chip coached all four of his children in soccer as well as countless others who to this day call him “Coach”.
Chip had exceptional faith and served as a parishioner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He attended the annual Manresa retreat in Convent, Louisiana which kept him grounded in his faith. He touched innumerable lives through mentoring and supporting others in various facets of his life.
Chip is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley Williams Burke, Jr. & Jane Colt Burke; brother, Michael Waring Burke; long-time family friend, Queen Esther Richardson. He is survived by his wife, Barbara O’Brien Burke; sons, Stanley (Monica), Morgan and Connor; daughter, Ellie & husband James; grandchildren Nicholas, Stella, Claudia, Palmer and Eleanor; sisters Eleanor “Elli” Burke Blaylock & husband Charles, Ruth Timpson Burke; sisters-in-law, Barbara Procell Burke, Catherine Sturgis & husband Brud, Patty Ferrell & husband Jack, Martha O’Brien & Lee Davis and husband Jay, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and so many wonderful friends near and far.
Thank you to Dr. Jennifer Angelo, Dr. Anil Veluvolu and his staff, Dr. George Wolcot, and to the amazing nurses and staff of St. Joseph’s Hospice.
Honoring him as pallbearers will be Frank Bright, Gray Teekell, Jimmy Muslow, Claude Rives, Dick Seale, Wayne Simmons and Cozie Wilhite. Honorary pallbearers include Bob Abbot, Silas Doublin, Buddy Jones and Kenny White.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, at Osborn Funeral Home with a Rosary Service to follow. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Matthew Long of St. Joseph Church. A private interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery.
