Susan Lawrence Sippel, 84, passed away on the 18th of July. Born January 8, 1936 in Palestine, TX, Susan was the daughter of Virginia “Gin” Scott Lawrence and Hiram “Red” Drayton Lawrence. Susan grew up in Shreveport and during her high school years, she attended boarding school and graduated from National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. She attended Southern Methodist University. Susan was a second-generation member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and graduated with an art degree.
One weekend a Shreveport friend named Delton Harrison set her up on a blind date with Jimmie Dick Sippel, also of Shreveport. Susan would talk about “floating” down the staircase at their home on McCormick Street, seeing Jimmie for the first time. During their courtship, Jimmie would “often” find a way to refuel his T-33 aircraft at Dallas Love Field to see his future bride.
Susan married Jimmie in 1957, at the age of 21. Their first son, Mark Thomas Sippel was born in 1958 and the family settled in Houston, TX. Their second son, Scott Carlin Sippel arrived nine years after, and then finally a little red-headed girl, Susan Creighton Sippel, five years later.
In Houston, Susan developed her talents as a folk-art painter and interior designer. Susan was an active alumna within the Houston Alumnae Chapter of ZTA supporting recruitment, volunteered at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and later in life, became the “best volunteer ever”, helping her daughter with charitable events. Susan and Jimmie moved and traveled extensively during Jimmie’s career in the petroleum industry. Susan always smiled, simply saying God never put oil in the best (travel) places. Eventually the family made their way to New Orleans, LA, then Dallas, TX and Paris, France. Susan loved traveling, collecting quotes/sayings, recipes and a bit of everything.
Susan and Jimmie retired in Fort Worth, TX and were married 62 years. Susan was predeceased by her mother, father, and husband. Susan is survived by her children: Mark Sippel (Irma) of Granbury, TX, Scott Sippel of Phoenix, AZ, and Susan Pajor (Matt) of Fort Worth, TX; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother, Scott Lawrence (Diane) of Shreveport and sister-in-law, Julia Sippel of Shreveport.
A private graveside service will be held at Forest Park Cemetery in Shreveport. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Susan's memory to the First United Methodist Church in Shreveport or any charity of your choice.
