He was awarded a football scholarship to Texarkana Junior College. He transferred to East Texas State University on another scholarship, where he played on the winning National Football team that went on to win the Tangerine Bowl.

Upon graduating from university, he volunteered and was accepted into Officer Candidate School in the United States Marine Corps. Once he completed his training, he was assigned to Marine Corps Headquarters at Quantico, Virginia. First Lt. Mandina continued to excel at sports and leadership while he played on the USMC football team. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, he continued his passion for sports and football, coaching at several high schools in Texas.

Tony not only had an award-winning personality, he was a true charmer to all. Using these great skills, he went into sales, working for Stetson Hat Company, Resistol Hat Company and Justin Boots Company. Being one of the top performers in his field, he was often awarded the Salesman of the Year award. After retiring, Tony wanted to reach back to his roots of store ownership, opening several stores in the north Texas area.
